The Speckled Mousebird (Colius striatus) is a distinctive and social bird found throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

It is the largest species of mousebird, recognizable by its long, slender tail, soft gray-brown plumage speckled with white, and a small crest on its head. This bird is often seen moving in tight family groups.
Adults typically measure 32–35 cm (12–14 in) in length, including their long tail, and weigh around 45–60 grams. Speckled Mousebirds are highly agile, capable of scurrying along branches like rodents. They feed mainly on fruits, berries, and leaves. These birds build cup-shaped nests, and the female usually lays 2–6 eggs, which hatch after an incubation period of about 13–14 days.

Photography Tips:
Speckled Mousebirds offer wonderful opportunities to capture dynamic group behavior and their acrobatic movements among branches. Because they are often active in dense foliage, a telephoto lens of at least 300mm is recommended. Shooting in early morning or late afternoon provides the best natural light.

Patience is key, as these birds can be elusive. But once located, their social interactions and distinctive tail movements make for compelling and unique images.
