The Martial Eagle (Polemaetus bellicosus) is Africa’s largest and most powerful eagle. It dominates open savannas, semi-arid plains, and lightly wooded landscapes across sub-Saharan Africa.

Adults typically measure 78–96 cm (31–38 in) in length. They also have an impressive wingspan of 188–260 cm. In addition, they are among the heaviest eagles on the continent, weighing approximately 3.0–6.5 kg. Females are noticeably larger and heavier than males. In appearance, the species is characterized by a dark-brown upper body. The underparts are white and heavily spotted with black.

The bird is further distinguished by its piercing yellow eyes. Like all birds, there is no gestation period. Instead, Martial Eagles usually lay a single egg, and only occasionally two. The egg is incubated for about 45–53 days. Breeding pairs maintain vast territories. They typically nest high in large trees or on cliff ledges.

Photography Tips:
The Martial Eagle offers exceptional but often rare opportunities. This is largely due to its wide-ranging behavior and low population density. To begin with, a long telephoto lens of 500 mm or more is highly recommended. This is especially useful when photographing perched birds at a distance. Early morning light is particularly effective. At this time, eagles often perch conspicuously while scanning for prey.

In addition, fast shutter speeds are essential when capturing flight shots. Martial Eagles are capable of swift and powerful aerial movements. Finally, positioning yourself in open habitats with clear sightlines can be very effective. Allowing plenty of time and patience greatly increases the chances of capturing striking portraits and dramatic in-flight images.
