Hartlaub’s turaco (Tauraco hartlaubi) is a striking, medium-sized bird native to the montane forests of East Africa. In particular, it is most commonly found in Kenya and northern Tanzania. The species is easily recognized by its vivid green plumage. Additionally, a deep blue tail provides strong visual contrast. Most notably, a distinctive white eye-ring gives the bird an expressive and memorable appearance.

Adults typically measure about 40–43 cm (16–17 in) in length. They weigh approximately 210–260 g (7.4–9.2 oz). Like other turacos, Hartlaub’s turaco feeds primarily on fruit. In addition, its diet is supplemented by leaves and flowers. As a result of this feeding behavior, it plays an important role in seed dispersal within forest ecosystems.

Breeding usually occurs during wetter seasons, when food is most abundant. Females lay one to two eggs per clutch. The incubation period lasts about 21–23 days. During this time, both parents share incubation duties. They also care for the chicks together after hatching. Hartlaub’s turacos are often seen moving quietly through the forest canopy. They use short, gliding flights between trees. Alternatively, they hop agilely along branches. Their soft calls and preference for dense foliage can make them difficult to spot. However, once found, their colors stand out beautifully against the greenery.

Photography Tips:
For photographers on safari, Hartlaub’s turaco can be a rewarding yet elusive subject. Look for them along forest edges and in natural clearings. These locations allow more light to filter through the canopy. A fast shutter speed helps freeze their quick movements and short flights. Meanwhile, longer lenses allow you to isolate the bird against soft, green backgrounds. Finally, early morning light works best, as it reveals fine feather detail and enhances the turaco’s rich, jewel-like tones.
