The banded mongoose (Mungos mungo) is a highly social small carnivore widely distributed across sub-Saharan Africa. It inhabits savannas, open woodlands, grasslands, and areas close to water. It is easily identified by the dark horizontal bands across its grey-brown body. These markings provide effective camouflage in dappled light. Adults typically measure 30–45 cm (12–18 in)
