Adults typically stand about 75–90 cm at the shoulder. They can measure up to 1.6 m in body length. Spotted Hyenas are robust animals and weigh between 45–85 kg. Females are generally larger and more dominant than males.

They have extremely strong jaws capable of crushing bone. This allows them to consume almost every part of a carcass. Highly intelligent and social, Spotted Hyenas are both skilled hunters and efficient scavengers. They often work together to bring down large prey. This makes them a compelling subject for wildlife observation and photography.

The gestation period of the Spotted Hyena is approximately 110 days. After this period, one to three cubs are born, most commonly two. Cubs are born with their eyes open and dark coats. They remain at communal dens for several months under the care of the clan.

Spotted Hyenas live in complex social groups known as clans. These clans can number up to 80 individuals. They are led by a dominant female. Their vocalizations, including the famous “laugh,” along with their bold behavior and intricate social hierarchy, make them an essential species to encounter on a photo safari. They also play a key role in maintaining the balance of Africa’s ecosystems.

Photo Tips:

Early morning and late afternoon light helps bring out the rich texture of their coarse fur and the subtle variations in their spotted coats, while also adding depth to the often harsh environments they inhabit. Positioning at eye level can transform their typically sloped posture into a more balanced and engaging composition, revealing character and presence that is easily missed from above. Patience is key—hyenas rarely sit still for long, but when they do, even briefly, the result can be a striking and authentic portrait of one of Africa’s most fascinating carnivores.

If you are lucky to see some Hyenas around a den its worth waiting to catch some shots of any pups that might be around. Typically I am shooting at 400mm + watch out for flare with backlit shots when the sun is low
